44 businesses open per day in Albania/ Construction and transportation had the greatest expansion throughout 2024

In 2024, the number of active economic enterprises in Albania (excluding farmers) reached 132,172, marking an increase of 1.4% compared to the previous year. The increase comes as a result of a higher registration dynamic, where during 2024, 15,970 new enterprises were registered, from 13,636 that were registered the previous year, with an increase of 17%. So, based on this pace, we can say that in 2024, an average of 44 businesses were opened per day.
The sectors that have led this growth are construction and transport. Construction has seen the largest expansion by 7.5%, going from 6,955 to 7,479 active enterprises. Transport and warehousing has also seen a significant boost by 7.2%, while more moderate growth has been recorded by the information and communication sector, industry and trade.
However, not all sectors have experienced growth. Agriculture, forestry and fishing have recorded a decrease of 1.4%, while accommodation and food services have decreased by 0.5%, a signal that may be related to the difficulties of sustainability in the hospitality sector after the tourist season. However, it should be noted that among the activities that have the greatest weight in the number of new registrations for 2024 is precisely accommodation, with 2,224 enterprises. So, we can say that services remain the heart of Albanian entrepreneurship, where 86% of enterprises are service producers.
The vast majority of enterprises are small. Only 1.5% of them have over 50 employees, which indicates an economy that continues to be dominated by microenterprises and family businesses. On the other hand, 5.3% of enterprises are with foreign or joint capital, mainly originating from Italy with 41.8%, Kosovo with 8.3% and Turkey with 6.5%.
These data reflect an economy that continues to expand slowly, with new impulses in the urban and construction sectors, while challenges remain for the manufacturing and agricultural sectors. The increase in new registrations signals moderate optimism in the entrepreneurial climate.
