The number of cars in the country increased by 10.5%/ Albanians doubled their use of electric vehicles
The Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) has published the annual report "Characteristics of Road Vehicles", which contains data on the structure and dynamics of road vehicles registered in the country for 2024. According to statistics, there is a significant increase in the number of vehicles in circulation, a trend that reflects economic developments, urbanization and the increase in demand for mobility in Albania.
At the end of 2024, the total number of road vehicles registered in the country (whether active or temporarily deregistered) reached 959,226, with an increase of 10.5% compared to the previous year, also signaling an expansion of the vehicle market in Albania.
Cars make up the majority of road traffic, accounting for 80.8% of total vehicles. Meanwhile, the number of cars per 1,000 inhabitants has increased from 292 in 2023 to 328 in 2024, indicating an improvement in the population's access to private transport.
According to the geographical division, the Tirana Region holds the first place in terms of the number of road vehicles, with 34.8% of the total. After Tirana come Durrës and Fier, which together constitute a significant percentage of the fleet. Meanwhile, Durrës results in having the highest number of vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, with 483, which indicates a high concentration of vehicles in relation to the population.
In terms of technical aspects, 58.8% of the vehicles in circulation have manual transmissions. Another positive trend is the increase in vehicles manufactured after 2011, which now account for 44.4% of all vehicles. In Albania, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz continue to be the most preferred brands by citizens, maintaining the leading positions in the ranking of the most used car brands.
Regarding fuel, 72.9% of vehicles continue to operate on diesel, while the use of electric vehicles has doubled compared to 2023. The increase in the number of vehicles, the improvement of the technical structure and the increase in the use of new and electric cars show that the Albanian market is moving towards the most modern road transport standards.
