Study: Smoking risks the extreme impoverishment of 13,000 Albanian families

Due to the high costs of tobacco consumption, nearly 13,000 families with 60,000 members in our country are at risk of falling below the poverty level. The study was carried out by the center “Partners in Solutions and Development” (DSA), and it analyzes the direct costs of smoking as well as the indirect ones associated with spending on diseases caused by it.

For this reason, a significant increase in the tobacco excise tax is recommended for our country in order to discourage smoking but also to better monitor the effects of this increase.

The study was presented at the conference on “Why reducing smoking is important for a society with economic and health well-being,” which included a number of action takers in our country, the Western Balkans, and the European Union.
