US-China trade war, Trump postpones visit to Beijing - Both sides' priority is to keep relations in balance

US President Donald Trump's request to postpone a planned summit in Beijing with Chinese leader Xi Jinping is dimming prospects for potential economic cooperation between the two countries. Trump's move shows how the Iran conflict has changed his foreign policy agenda. The delay delays the rebuilding of bilateral relations, just as the two sides wrapped up high-profile trade talks in Paris on Monday, laying the groundwork for Trump's trip to Beijing, originally scheduled for later this month.
"The situation is not in danger and Beijing still wants to host the summit, but the US-Iran conflict and the Supreme Court's ruling on tariff policies have complicated these efforts," said Zhao Minghao, an international relations expert from Shanghai University.
A source familiar with the Paris talks said ahead of the second day of talks that China had shown openness to potential purchases of U.S. agricultural goods. The two sides also discussed the flow of rare earth minerals largely controlled by China. The state-run China Daily newspaper described the negotiations in an editorial as “constructive.”
US officials have sent mixed messages about why the meeting was postponed. On Sunday, Trump told the Financial Times that he might postpone the meeting if China did not help unblock the Strait of Hormuz. On Monday, the US Treasury Secretary said Trump might postpone the trip because of the coordination of the war effort - not because of a demand for China to help secure the strait or because of any trade dispute.
However, despite the delay, the priority for both sides is to maintain relations at a balanced level and continue planning for a successful visit, analysts said.
