Hall in Hamallaj: Rehabilitation of the hydropower plant increases flood safety and protects agriculture and tourism

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Andis Salla, together with the Mayor of Durrës, Emiriana Sako, inspected the works at the Hamallaj Dam, where an important investment is being completed for the complete rehabilitation of this facility, with the aim of increasing the capacities of the drainage system and protecting agricultural, residential and tourist areas from floods.
The investment included the reconstruction of the pumping station infrastructure, the installation of new pumps with higher capacity, automatic control systems and modern technical equipment, significantly increasing the efficiency and safety of the hydropower plant's operation.
During the inspection, Minister Salla emphasized that this is a strategic investment for one of the fastest developing agricultural and tourist areas in the country.
"Together with the Mayor and the director of the Drainage Board, we are at the Hamallaj Hydropower Plant, where we have carried out a series of interventions in the infrastructure of the pumping station and have invested in the equipment necessary for its operation. This is a necessary investment to prevent problems during the winter season, as about 2 thousand hectares of agricultural land depend on the operation of this hydropower plant," said the minister.
Salla announced that the investment has increased pumping capacity through new equipment and automatic electronic systems, guaranteeing a faster and more efficient response in the event of intense rainfall.
"This investment not only serves agriculture, but also tourism, which is developing rapidly in this area. It is very important that, in addition to preparing for the summer season, we have the necessary infrastructure to prevent problems during the winter season. This was an investment requested by the Municipality of Durrës and financed by the Albanian Government through the Ministry of Agriculture," he stated.
The Minister emphasized that the government is continuing to invest in the modernization of irrigation and drainage infrastructure throughout the country, as a key element for supporting farmers, protecting agricultural production, and sustainable economic development.
"We are here to prevent and to invest. At first glance it may look like a building, but in reality this hydroelectric plant performs a vital function for the drainage of thousands of hectares of agricultural land and for supporting the development of tourism in this area. We will continue to finance such investments throughout Albania", concluded Minister Salla.
Thanks to this investment, the capacity and safety of the drainage system has been significantly increased, guaranteeing the protection of over 1,300 hectares of agricultural land, as well as residential and tourist areas of the Municipality of Durrës, while its benefits extend to an even wider agricultural area that depends on the functioning of this system.
