Construction of Road Corridor VIII - 2 expropriation decisions approved, paving the way for the continuation of works

The government has approved two expropriation decisions for the construction of Corridor VIII, paving the way for the continuation of works in the Elbasan - Qafë Thanë and Elbasan - Lekaj segments.
One of them is related to the expropriations for the Papër - Ura e Grykshit segment, where compensations have been determined for the owners of properties affected by the construction of the axis, with a total expropriation value of around 14.6 million lekë. Meanwhile, the second decision includes changes to the previous decision for the expropriations related to phase III of the project, in the direction from Elbasan to Qafë Thanë, increasing the total value to 14.7 million lekë, from 684 thousand lekë previously.
The projects are part of the expansion of Corridor VIII, one of the strategic axes that aims to connect Albania with North Macedonia and further with the European transport network.
The progress of the works in the Albanian territory varies according to the lots where the work is being done, while the closure of some lots is expected during this year. In the Elbasan - Qafë Thanë segment, in addition to lot I, which is already completed, the closure of phases II, III and V, which include the segment from Labinot-Fushë to Librazhd, is aimed at within the year. In total, in the Elbasan - Qafë Thanë direction there are 8 contracts covering 26 kilometers.
In parallel, during 2026, 6 more lots are expected to be completed in the Elbasan - Rrogozhina direction, covering about 20 kilometers out of a total of 40.7 kilometers.
However, for the full realization of the corridor, there are still segments to be tendered. In the Elbasan - Qafë Thanë direction, the construction of the road from the village of Xhyrë to the connection with North Macedonia is expected to be contracted. While in the Elbasan - Rrogozhin axis, the segment from Peqin to the connection with the Adriatic-Ionian highway remains to be procured. Also, part of the project will be the Elbasan bypass, which will connect the segments that are currently under construction, for which a tender has been opened for the construction of the first 4 km.
