Two-day Xi Jinping-Trump meeting begins/Economic cooperation, at the center. Taiwan, a hot topic

Two-day Xi Jinping-Trump meeting begins/Economic cooperation, at the center.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump that trade talks were making progress at the start of a two-day summit on Thursday, but warned that the dispute over Taiwan could take relations down a dangerous path. The Chinese leader's comments set the stage for what Trump described as perhaps "the greatest summit ever."

Xi began the summit by telling Trump that a stable relationship between the world's two largest economies benefits the entire world. "When we cooperate, both sides benefit; when we confront each other, both sides suffer," he said in brief remarks that were open to the media.

"You're a great leader, sometimes people don't like me saying it, but I say it anyway," Trump replied. "There are those who say this could be the greatest summit ever," he added.

According to a statement from China's Foreign Ministry, Xi said negotiations between U.S. and Chinese economic and trade teams in South Korea on Wednesday had achieved "overall balanced and positive results." The talks were aimed at preserving the trade truce reached between Trump and Xi last October and establishing mechanisms to support future trade and investment, officials with knowledge of the matter said.

Xi also raised the issue of Taiwan, the democratically governed island claimed by China and armed by the United States. The Chinese leader told Trump that Taiwan was the most important issue in U.S.-China relations and that if mishandled could lead to conflict and an extremely dangerous situation, according to a Chinese statement on the talks, which ended after just over two hours.

Beyond trade issues, Trump is expected to encourage China to persuade Iran to make a deal with Washington to end the conflict. But analysts doubt Xi will be willing to push Tehran hard or end support for its military, given Iran's value to Beijing as a strategic counterweight to the United States.
