The risk of a "lost generation"/ Shocking report in Britain, 1.25

The UK's youth unemployment rate, which has risen sharply in recent years, will continue to rise unless action is taken, increasing the risk of a "lost generation" in the country.

Today, around one in eight young people aged 16 to 24 are “not in education, employment or training” and this number risks “rising to one in six within five years or 1.25 million young people”.

The “jobs boom” that the UK has experienced in recent decades has largely left young people behind, especially as low- and mid-skilled entry-level jobs, particularly in the hospitality sector, have declined.

84% of young people affected want to find work or training, but it estimates that “the welfare state is exacerbating inactivity.” In 2024-25, for every pound spent on supporting youth employment, around £25 was spent on social benefits.

Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to lead a whole-of-society effort to change this, to dismantle the status quo and create a new deal for young people.

The UK unemployment rate, across all age groups, rose slightly in the three months to the end of March, reaching 5%.
