Volkswagen and Mercedes "rule" Albanian roads / Cars are increasing,

The number of road vehicles in Albania has crossed the 1 million mark for the first time. At the end of 2025, there were 1 million and 48 thousand vehicles registered in the country, with active status or temporarily deregistered, 9.3% more compared to the previous year.

The vast majority of the road fleet is occupied by cars, which constitute 80.8% of the total. The increase in the number of cars has also led to an expansion of the level of motorization, where in 2025 361 cars were registered for every 1,000 inhabitants, up from 326 in 2024.

Tirana has more cars, Durrës leads per capita

More than a third of the country's road vehicles are registered in the Tirana region. The capital city concentrates 34.7% of the total, followed by Durrës with 13.6% and Fier with 9.1%.

However, in relation to the number of inhabitants, Durrës is the most motorized region in Albania. There are 535 cars for every 1,000 inhabitants in this region, significantly above the national average.

More than half of the vehicles were manufactured before 2010

Despite the increase in the number of vehicles, data shows that the Albanian car fleet remains relatively old. Around 55.3% of vehicles were produced during the period 2000-2010, while 45.7% of cars are between 11 and 20 years old.

Manual transmission vehicles also continue to dominate the market, accounting for 55.9% of all road vehicles, despite the rapid increase in automatic transmission vehicles.

In terms of brands, Volkswagen holds first place, with 19.7% of cars in circulation, while Mercedes-Benz ranks second, with 18.1% of the total.

Oil dominates, but electric cars are growing rapidly

Diesel remains the main fuel used by Albanian vehicles. In 2025, 72.1% of cars used diesel, proving that the transition towards less polluting vehicles is still in its early stages.

However, the electric car market is expanding rapidly. Their number increased by 91.2% in one year.
