Girls, more access to technology - Zavazava: Very low involvement, investments

Girls and women must be given greater access to technology, as the only way to a transformative future for society through digitalization and artificial intelligence.

International Girls in Technology Day 2026 brings Albania to the center of international celebrations, together with Brazil, in a global initiative of the International Telecommunication Union, ITU, to empower girls in technology and communications.

Bledar Kazia, Director of the National Cyber Security Authority

“Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, are instruments of national power and stability that we will have in the future. Albania continues to remain committed. As a country that has faced complex cyber attacks, we have taken decisive steps to strengthen our digital infrastructure, to meet and sometimes exceed international standards. But we must accept that technology alone does not guarantee security, it is people who do it and a system that does not fully include everyone is never truly secure and without young women included in all parts of the system, things are in vain. We need to invest in young people so that the next digital generation considers diversity in technology. In partnership with ITU, we reflect a shared vision of inclusive transformation by including young women.”

Government policies play an important role in the inclusion of girls in the field of technology and cybersecurity.,

Albana Koçiu, Deputy Prime Minister of Albania

"We are fully aware that technology offers unique opportunities to bridge the development gap. We have created a system of 1300 services offered to citizens. Step by step, we are implementing the Albania20230 program that raises the standard of ambition and our approach is based on the harmonization of gender issues. Every policy is designed to provide equal access to women and girls. We cannot invest in technology if we do not address those aspects that prevent half of the population from advancing. We must ensure that when a girl in Albania sees technology, she does not think that this is not for her, but says, this is exactly where I belong. We must make it easier for the Future Leaders to unleash the high potential in this field."

Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director General of the International Telecommunication Union, ITU

“Access is the first step. Today we have 5.8 billion people online. Even when girls are online, they are often consumers. Only 22 percent of artificial intelligence professionals are women. 80 percent of businesses are built by male teams. If we don’t change course, artificial intelligence will only automate the future of half the population. How do we move into action? Access to the digital environment, we need to give them the tools to build, we need artificial intelligence camps with new chapters, with modules, that also teach them ethics. Policies need to change.”

The conference raised discussions on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and an inclusive digital future.
