Non-performing loans at 18-year low/ The indicator fell to 3.75% in April. Banks maintain stability

The non-performing loan ratio in the Albanian banking system fell to 3.75% at the end of April 2026, from 3.85% a month earlier. According to Bank of Albania data, this is the lowest level recorded since January 2008, confirming the further improvement in the quality of the loan portfolio in the banking sector.
After slight fluctuations during the first months of the year, the indicator has returned to a downward trajectory. In January 2026, the non-performing loan ratio was 3.85%, in February it dropped to 3.80%, in March it returned to 3.85%, while in April it fell to 3.75%. The performance shows that the level of non-performing loans continues to remain low and far from the high levels recorded after the financial crisis.
The improvement is also reflected in other asset quality indicators. Net non-performing loans to equity fell to 6.27%, from 6.56% in March, while net non-performing loans to tier 1 capital fell to 5.71%, from 5.96% a month earlier. Similarly, net non-performing loans to total assets decreased to 5.67%, from 6% in March.
Meanwhile, the level of liquidity in the banking sector remains high, although it has marked a slight decrease from month to month. Liquid assets accounted for 30.23% of total assets at the end of April, from 30.65% in March, indicating that banks continue to have sufficient capacity to meet short-term liabilities.
Banking sector profitability also remains at good levels. The return on equity (ROE) indicator increased to 12.17% in April, from 11.83% in March, although it remains lower compared to the beginning of the year.
Overall, Bank of Albania data show that the Albanian banking system continues to maintain a healthy financial position, with a low level of non-performing loans, good capitalization and sufficient liquidity to support lending activity.
