Albania approaches the European average/ Employment rate 74.1% in 2024 compared to 75.8% in the EU
Year after year, the Albanian labor market is showing steady improvements, according to official statistics. Scan Intel’s analysis for the 20-64 age group shows that in 2024 the employment rate reached 74.1%, registering an increase of 0.7% compared to the previous year. This improvement is particularly noticeable when compared to earlier years: in 2022 the employment rate was 70.4%, while during 2021 and 2020 it remained the same at 66.3%.
If we compare these data with the European Union average, it turns out that the latter was 75.8% in 2024, which shows that Albania is 1.7 percentage points below the EU average, an almost minimal difference. On the other hand, the EU was 2.2 points below the 78% target set by the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan for 2030.
Almost half (46.5%) of all EU regions had reached or exceeded the 78% employment target. These 113 regions were mainly concentrated in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Sweden. Even if the employment rate in Tirana is taken into account, it is lower than the EU average, but higher than in some other European cities.
Many of the regions with relatively low employment rates in the EU were rural, sparsely populated or located on the periphery of the continent. This pattern was particularly evident in the southern regions of Spain and Italy, most of Greece, some regions in Romania and the more remote regions of France. Another group of regions with low employment rates are former industrial areas that have not adapted economically. Some of them have witnessed the negative impact of globalisation on traditional sectors of their economies.
