First in the region for part-time employment/ Retirees, also a strong part of the market
Part-time work has become an increasingly attractive option for many Albanians. For those who have other commitments, studies or simply seek an additional source of income, part-time work is becoming the ideal solution. In recent years, with the expansion of the labor market and the increase in opportunities for working from home, this form of employment has become increasingly common in Albania. According to the Institute of Statistics, during 2024 for people aged 20-64 the percentage of part-time employees to total employees is 12.7%, for this age group. Meanwhile, in the EU it turns out that 17.1% worked part-time. Part-time jobs in the country are considered those jobs where there are less than 35 working hours.
As in our country, it is also observed in the European Union that women are the ones who have the highest percentage of part-time employment. This is often related to family commitments, childcare or the need to balance professional and personal life.
If these data are compared with other countries in the region, it turns out that Albania tops the list for the highest percentage of part-time employment. According to data from the European Statistical Agency, in Serbia the percentage of part-time employees is only 5.9%, while Bosnia & Herzegovina ranks much lower, with only 2.5% of citizens working part-time.
Meanwhile, at the European level, the Netherlands and Austria are the countries that lead for the highest percentage of employment with reduced hours, turning this form of work into a natural part of their labor market. On the other hand, Bulgaria maintains the lowest percentage of part-time employees, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania.
However, this trend is not limited to young people, other age groups are also embracing this flexible way of employment. If we look at INSTAT data, it is noted that the pensioner age group is active in the part-time labor market, it turns out that for people over 65 years old, the percentage of part-time employment to the total number of employees for that age group is 43.9%, which shows that part-time work is a good alternative for them. Many older people choose to work to stay engaged, to maintain a routine and after retirement.
