"Lower gas prices!" - Trump warns retailers

US President Donald Trump said fuel retailers must immediately lower prices and warned there would be "big problems" if they did not.
"Gasoline retailers must lower their prices, IMMEDIATELY," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "There will be no metering, which is completely illegal. If retailers don't do this, we are in big trouble! Start aiming for around $2.50 a gallon," he wrote.
Last week, Trump said he had instructed the Justice Department to investigate oil companies for failing to lower prices in line with falling crude oil costs, accusing the companies of "deceiving" customers.
Oil prices rose sharply this year after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February and Iran responded with its own attacks on Israel and Gulf states with US bases.
Consumers have raised concerns about high gasoline prices as the president and his Republican colleagues struggle to hold onto their narrow majority in Congress in November's midterm elections.
Diplomacy between Washington and Tehran to resolve the conflict has recently translated into some relief for Americans. US-Israeli attacks on Iran and Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed thousands and displaced millions. A ceasefire took effect in April and has since been extended, but the US and Iran have accused each other of violations.
