France, 80 million euros for air conditioning - Schools, nurseries and day care

State-owned electricity company Électricité de France (EDF) will invest 80 million euros to equip schools, nurseries and daycare centers with cooling systems as the country faces increasingly severe heat waves.

The funding will cover a wide range of equipment, including fans, evaporative systems, portable air conditioners, fixed air conditioning units and long-term structural cooling improvements in the future. “As heat waves affect our country, we wanted to take concrete action by helping schools, nurseries and leisure centres to be equipped with affordable and sustainable cooling,” said EDF CEO Bernard Fontana.

Half of the funding, €40 million, will go towards fans, evaporation systems and portable air conditioning units, with a limited number of 10 units per building. The remaining €40 million will support structural improvements.

France is facing repeated extreme temperatures that are increasingly disrupting public services, particularly in the education system, where classes are struggling to function. Education unions have called on teaching staff to use their right to strike if necessary to protest the lack of improvement in working conditions, with temperatures rising above 30°C and in some areas exceeding 40°C.

“Staff are struggling, both literally and figuratively, to maintain the public education service, alone and in difficult conditions,” the education unions said. They added that the national education system remains “deeply unprepared” for heatwaves, which are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.
