Diplomas are losing ground in the job market - Xhihani: Employers are looking for more practical skills

For years, possessing a university degree has been considered a significant achievement, however, as the job market constantly changes, the importance of academic training is often being questioned.
"Labor market dynamics are increasingly showing that practice is worth more than theoretical information. Practical skills are increasingly valued more than those skills or diplomas that candidates can present in a job. Universities are still stuck with the curricula of the past, where the labor market was not so changeable. We have had a change in AI in a very short time, which is changing many elements in an employment relationship. I think that a necessary change will be needed in the education system, but also in the implementation of each university major. The diploma must be combined with practical skills ," says Arbër Xhihani, employment expert.
Xhihani emphasizes that employers encounter difficulties in the lives of employees and precisely for this reason, we have a reversal of priorities.
"We are in a situation where employers are facing great difficulty. This has led to even those basic requirements for having a diploma, now being eliminated due to necessity."
Some professions that are easily replaceable by AI will move from university training to some practical training, to the benefit of the employer.
"A diploma is often required, even though the tasks can be accomplished with more basic training. Having a diploma gives the employer additional assurance that the employee has a complete education due to their university education, but it does not delay the professional journey of any candidate," says Xhihani.
Jihani calls on young people not to make wrong choices, but to match their skills with the needs of the market.
