The General Directorate of Customs welcomes the 31st Meeting of the Network of National Coordinators of the European Union Customs Program

The General Directorate of Customs, in cooperation with the European Commission, organized the 31st Meeting of the Network of National Coordinators of the “EU Customs” Program, with the participation of representatives of the customs administrations of the European Union member states and candidate countries.
The activity focused on strengthening cooperation between customs administrations, exchanging experiences on the implementation of the "EU Customs" program, as well as discussing future priorities in order to modernize and harmonize European customs systems.
In his welcoming speech, the Director General of Customs, Mr. Besmir Beja, appreciated the strategic importance of the “EU Customs” Program for the Albanian Customs Administration and the country’s European integration process. He emphasized that the strict fulfillment of the conditions in the customs field remains one of the main priorities of the customs administration in the framework of the negotiations for Albania’s membership in the European Union.
The Director General announced that the package of amendments to the Albanian Customs Code has already been sent to the Ministry of Finance, with the aim of achieving full approximation of Albanian customs legislation with the acquis communautaire of the European Union. Mr. Beja also underlined that the support of the European Union through the “EU Customs” Program has played an important role in the modernization of the Albanian Customs Administration, increasing professional capacities and advancing the processes of harmonization with European standards, with the objective of closing the negotiations on Chapter 29 – Customs Union during the first half of next year.
During the meeting, participants discussed the mid-term evaluation of the EU Customs Programme, developments on the Strategic Customs Management Framework (SMCP), as well as the role of cooperative activities, working visits, seminars and expert groups in strengthening customs administrations.
An important part of the agenda was also dedicated to the experience of candidate countries in participating in the "EU Customs" Program, where Albania presented its progress towards European integration, active participation in the program's activities and the development of customs systems according to European Union standards.
