Savings "return" to banks in April/ BoA: Deposits increased slightly to 1.5 trillion lek after fluctuations in the first months of the year

April brought a slight increase in savings in banks, after the fluctuations of the first months of the year. Data show that Albanians have increased their deposits again, maintaining high levels of savings in the banking system.
According to data from the Bank of Albania, at the end of April, total deposits reached around 1.50 trillion lek.
Compared to March, this translates into a slight increase, by about 0.5%. So, after the contraction in March, Albanians seem to have returned some of their savings to banks, maintaining high levels of deposits in the system.
The majority continues to be in lek and has increased in April. Deposits in local currency increased by about 10 billion lek during the month. The increase is particularly noticeable in current accounts, which are the money that citizens use most often for payments and expenses. This indicates that liquidity in the economy continues to remain high.
Meanwhile, deposits in foreign currency (such as euros or dollars) have slightly decreased, by about 2 billion lek. However, there is no major change in citizens' preferences, they continue to keep their savings in the same way as before, without strong movements from one currency to another.
If we look at who saves the most, families and individuals remain the main group. They hold the largest share of deposits in banks. Although there are some small fluctuations from one month to the next, their savings remain at high levels. On the other hand, businesses are moving their money more frequently, which is related to economic activity and the payments they make.
Overall, April shows a slight recovery in deposit growth after the previous weakening. We are not dealing with a strong increase, but with a stabilization of the situation. The level of deposits remains high, which is a positive sign for the stability of the banking system and for the fact that citizens and businesses still have a stable savings base.
