Between office and home, young people prefer hybrid work - Hasalla: Albanian employers want to keep employees under surveillance

The Covid-19 pandemic changed the way the job market works, forcing millions of employees to move their offices to home for the first time. But a few years after the pandemic, the model that is gaining more ground is no longer fully remote work, but hybrid work, where employees split their time between home and the office. Employment expert Gertjana Hasalla explains what factors are influencing this choice.
"Young people no longer choose a remote job, but prefer a job that can be hybrid. So two or three days in the office and the rest from home, rather than a job that is full time in the office. When you are working remotely, especially when you are young, it is difficult to have the support of colleagues, or proper mentoring, among other things you also have social isolation, because you do not have the opportunity to interact. It is good to have both options. It is good that companies have started to have the European mindset of offering hybrid work. Today in Albania, office work is more widespread than remote work. There are jobs that are difficult to do remotely and there are other jobs that are impossible to do remotely. We must be careful to understand in which sectors remote or hybrid work can be implemented," explains Hasalla.
But, in the Albanian reality, this hybrid work model still does not seem to be very present, but is mainly implemented by foreign companies operating in our country.
"It is difficult in Albania, especially for companies that have an Albanian owner, to accept the remote or hybrid work mentality. There is always a tendency to monitor them. They need to be in the office, to be watched there for 8 hours. Companies that come from abroad and have their branches in Albania choose to do this. Many of the companies that operate in the technology field are people who themselves understand that there is a need to have employees who do the work, but not to be under observation in the office. These are jobs that are done with a laptop with you. You can take the laptop anywhere and it becomes easier this way to actually see that the work is being done and there is a result, there is productivity, but the employee is also satisfied with this opportunity to be a little freer. Hybrid work is monitored through tracking systems, which the company sets up to see that you are really online and working," says Hasalla.
Among other things, Hasalla explains that in developed EU countries, hybrid work is becoming the norm as it gives employees more flexibility, avoids long commutes from suburban areas to the city, and at the same time reduces operating costs for companies.
