Albania enters a new phase of negotiations for membership in the European Union.
The 8th Intergovernmental Conference Albania - European Union, to be held in Brussels on May 26, 2026, paves the way for the closing phase of negotiations for membership in the European Union.
The Media and Information Agency announced the decision adopted today by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States of the European Union (COREPER) to hold the 8th Intergovernmental Conference Albania - European Union,
According to this decision, the fulfillment of the Intermediate Conditions in the "Fundamentals" Chapter Group is confirmed, and the Conditions for the Closure of the accession negotiations are determined for Chapter 23 "Judiciary and Fundamental Rights" and Chapter 24 "Justice, Freedom and Security".
The holding of the 8th Intergovernmental Conference officially paves the way for Albania to enter the closing phase of negotiations for membership in the European Union.
This decision constitutes an important moment in the progress of the accession negotiations with the European Union and confirms Albania's steady progress in fulfilling the key priorities of the accession negotiation process, the rule of law and the consolidation of democratic institutions.
This decision assesses Albania's progress in consolidating the reform of the judiciary, as well as in the independent, efficient and integrity functioning of the judiciary and independent institutions, as well as in the fight against corruption and organised crime. This decision also assesses progress in the field of human rights, including freedom of expression and the media, the right to property, respect for the rights of national minorities, equality and non-discrimination, in line with the fundamental standards and values of the European Union.
Today's decision reconfirms the European Union's support for Albania's European perspective and appreciates the commitment of Albanian institutions to implementing transformative reforms, strengthening the rule of law, democratic consolidation and sustainable economic and social development.
Albania, based on the progress made so far and guided by a clear European vision, remains determined to deepen reforms and results in the areas of judiciary and fundamental rights, justice, freedom and security, public procurement, statistics and financial control, Chapter I "Founders" and beyond, and to move at a sustainable pace in fulfilling the criteria for membership in the European Union, within this decade.
