Center of the future, Durana Tech Park joins the initiative for eco-industrial

Durana Tech Park, owned by the Albanian Investment Corporation (AIC), has joined the network of pilot locations in the Western Balkans under the Eco-Industrial Parks Initiative. Located near Tirana and conceived as a hub for technology, innovation and advanced industries, the park is further supporting its goals to attract international investment and future-oriented industries, as well as to strengthen Albania’s competitiveness in European markets.

The Eco-Industrial Parks Initiative is led by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, in partnership with the European Union, through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). This effort supports industrial zones and technology parks in developing investment-ready ecosystems, where companies collaborate, share infrastructure and services, and reduce costs and environmental impact. “Durana Tech Park is conceived as a modern ecosystem for innovation, technology and investment, and participation in the Eco-Industrial Parks project represents an important step towards realizing this vision. By integrating sustainability, efficient resource management and international best practices into our development model, we aim to create a competitive environment that attracts quality investments and supports the country’s long-term economic transformation,” said Florensa Haxhi Kovaçi, General Director of Durana Tech Park.
The selection of Durana Tech Park as a pilot park within the Eco-Industrial Parks Initiative comes as a reflection of its potential to develop as a modern center that combines technology, innovation and sustainable industrial development. The strategic positioning, long-term vision and integrated development model place Durana Tech Park in a key role in attracting value-added industries and future-oriented investments.

“Durana Tech Park represents an important opportunity to support a new generation of industrial and technological development in Albania. By integrating innovation, sustainability and modern infrastructure planning, we aim to create an environment that attracts investment, supports business growth and further positions Albania as a destination for future-oriented industries,” said Enkelejd Musabelliu, Deputy Minister of Economy and Innovation of Albania.

The initiative is also part of the European Union’s Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans and supports Albania’s alignment with EU environmental and competitiveness standards. “For Albania, sustainable industrial transformation is important. Albania needs to align with EU environmental and competitiveness standards, and accelerate the pace to keep pace with EU developments and become more competitive ahead of EU accession. Eco-Industrial Parks can play an important role in this regard, as they promote the principles of the circular economy, improve resource efficiency and encourage sustainable industrial planning. We welcome Durana Tech Park’s willingness to embrace these essential principles as the park moves from a virtual entity to the first physical eco-industrial park in Albania,” said Ritva Heikkinen, Head of Cooperation at the European Union Delegation to Albania.

IFC provides technical assistance and global expertise through the EIP framework, including conceptual planning, technical guidance, capacity building, and investment positioning support. “This initiative is about supporting Albania in attracting private investment, improving infrastructure and industrial planning, and creating the conditions for businesses to grow. Ultimately, it is about creating better jobs and stronger economic opportunities,” said Massimiliano Paolucci, World Bank Country Manager for Albania.

As part of this initiative, IFC experts are conducting technical workshops and planning sessions with Durana Tech Park representatives and institutional stakeholders this week. The activities focus on conceptual planning, management services, and future development opportunities, in line with international EIP standards.

In line with policies such as the European Green Deal, the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans and the Western Balkans Economic and Investment Plan 2021–2027, the initiative aims to support industrial decarbonisation and the creation of sustainable and competitive industrial zones. The European Commission, through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), has played a key role in supporting such projects across the region.
