Fewer vineyards, but grapes "resist"/ Higher yield keeps production "on its feet". Fier leads the country

Albania is losing more and more area planted with vineyards, but grape production is not falling at the same rate. Higher yields per hectare have offset some of the shrinking area, keeping national production almost at the same level as a year ago.
Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, processed by INSTAT, show that a total of 182,859 tons of grapes were produced in Albania during 2025. Compared to 2024, when production reached 183 thousand tons, a slight decrease of 0.3%, or about 560 tons, was recorded.
The majority of production came from vineyards, with 108.7 thousand tons, while 74 thousand tons were produced from pergolas. Grapes from vineyards accounted for about 59% of total production, while those from pergolas accounted for about 41%.
The performance of the two categories was different. Production from vineyards increased slightly by 0.2% compared to 2024, when it was 108.5 thousand tons. In contrast, production from pergolas fell by about 1%, from 74.9 thousand to 74.1 thousand tons.
The increase in vineyard production was achieved despite a significant contraction in planted area. In 2025, the total area of vineyards decreased to 9,385 hectares, from 9,845 hectares the previous year, marking a decrease of 4.7%.
Production was supported by higher yields, which reached 121.5 quintals per hectare, up from 115.9 quintals in 2024. This represents an increase of nearly 5% and is one of the highest levels recorded in recent years.
The shrinkage of vineyards becomes even more apparent in a long-term comparison. In 2018, Albania had around 11,000 hectares of vineyards, around 1,400 hectares more than in 2025. Within seven years, the area has been reduced by 13%.
However, production from vineyards has fallen much less. From 110 thousand tons in 2018, it fell to 108.7 thousand tons in 2025, a decrease of only 1.6%. This shows that the increase in yield has mitigated the effect of the loss of planted areas.
By region, Fier was the largest producer of grapes in the country, with 40.5 thousand tons, followed by Elbasan with 30.4 thousand tons. These two regions alone together provided approximately 39% of the national production.
Following them are Berat, Tirana, Vlora and Durrës. The lowest production was recorded in Kukës and Gjirokastër.
