USA, heat wave disrupts July 4th celebrations/ Heat damaged electricity grids

A dangerous heat wave disrupted July 4th celebrations across large parts of the central and eastern U.S., forcing officials to cancel or postpone dozens of parades, concerts and fireworks displays.

Among the events disrupted by the scorching heat was the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, one of the centerpiece events of President Donald Trump's efforts to mark the nation's 250th anniversary.

The fair, designed to showcase all 50 states, was temporarily closed Friday afternoon as temperatures reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).

Late Friday, organizers of the National Park Service Independence Day Parade in Washington announced they had canceled the annual event due to safety concerns.

Record temperatures swept across the eastern US due to the emergence of a high-pressure system known as a "heat dome," which traps a mass of hot air over a region and can cause increased humidity.

The scorching conditions also strained power grids. PJM, the largest U.S. power grid operator that serves 67 million people in the Mid-Atlantic, South Atlantic and Washington, D.C. areas, ordered customers to enroll in emergency conservation programs to limit usage. The steps were necessary to combat generator outages, overloaded transmission lines and a surge in demand for air conditioning due to the heat.

In New York, approximately 17,000 customers were without power by late Friday afternoon.

Over 185 million people, more than half the U.S. population, were under a heat advisory on Friday, the National Weather Service said.

Weather forecasters and government officials have warned that the heat wave could be deadly. They have urged Americans spending the long weekend outdoors to stay hydrated.
