"American liquefied gas, a strategic priority" - Request of the

The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo has urged the government to place access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States and the development of related infrastructure at the top of the country's strategic priorities. According to the American Chamber, such an orientation would not only improve Kosovo's energy security and economic development, but would also further deepen the strategic partnership with the United States.

In its response, the Chamber assesses that Kosovo's energy sector continues to rely mainly on outdated lignite-fired power plants, while electricity imports remain a significant financial burden. Increasing energy demand, planned overhauls of existing capacities and international market fluctuations are making the diversification of energy sources increasingly necessary.

It is also noted that important projects for LNG infrastructure and energy interconnections are being developed in Southeastern Europe, which are creating new opportunities for a more secure and sustainable supply of natural gas. If it does not act in time, Kosovo risks being left out of these new regional energy corridors.

According to the American Chamber, the main challenge no longer lies in the availability of gas, but in Kosovo's readiness to take advantage of these opportunities. This requires investments in infrastructure, improved legal and regulatory frameworks, and closer cooperation with strategic partners.

The Chamber estimates that access to natural gas would help reduce dependence on electricity imports, support the integration of renewable sources, and increase the competitiveness of the local economy in the face of increasingly stringent European Union standards for carbon emissions.

Finally, the American Chamber of Commerce calls on the Government of Kosovo to take concrete steps to integrate the country into regional gas networks, warning that delays in this regard could prolong energy vulnerability and limit Kosovo's economic potential.
