From hotels to agriculture, who benefits from tourism? - Topuzi: Every tourist who comes employs seven employees

Tourism does not only bring income to hotels and restaurants. Its effect extends to construction, agriculture, transportation, trade and a number of other services, setting in motion a significant part of the local economy.
According to the head of the Association of Tour Operators, Zak Topuzi, every tourist who enters the country creates demand for several professions and economic activities, from the simplest jobs to well-paid management positions.
"Tourism is the industry that employs more other industries together. So, every tourist who comes to the border employs seven other people. That's all we need to understand. And tourism has one specific thing, it doesn't limit people to certain professional backgrounds. So, you have to be an IT professional to work in certain types of jobs and get a high salary. Tourism gives you the opportunity to work from a waiter, a driver, a farmer, to a manager, a hotel manager."
Topuzi rejects the perception that tourism investments only create jobs for waiters and cleaners. According to him, in high-standard tourist structures, the majority of income is distributed to salaries and operating expenses.
"And there is a misconception that I was following, I have been following these, these months, talking about tourism or investments, resorts creating... also the concept that we only employ cleaners or, or waiters, is a very misconception. A large tourist investment at the five-star level and higher quality, 45% to 48% has salaries. So, there is salary consumption. Only 15% to 20% are the profits of the corporation that manages this thing. And the rest, so almost 30 or so, 32-34% are, let's say, operational expenses that are still related to the area. So, there are food supplies, maintenance, the carpenter, the chair will be replaced... so all of these, the majority remain in place."
Hotels and restaurants receive direct revenue, construction benefits from investments, while the local economy can receive the most sustainable share of the value, through wages, supplies, and services that support tourism activity.
