118 services per day for the Tirana–Durrës–Rinas train/

While a few days ago the procedure for selecting the private operator that will provide the passenger rail transport service was published, the documents published by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy also reveal how this service is expected to function.

According to the basic public service package, the Tirana-Durres line will be covered in 36 minutes and 22 seconds, while the trip from Tirana to Mother Teresa International Airport will take 19 minutes and 47 seconds. Both services are expected to start in 2027, after the completion of works on the new electrified railway line.

The documents foresee a total of 118 services per working day. Of these, 44 will be carried out on the Tirana-Durres line and 74 on the Tirana-Airport segment. In the initial phase of operation, four electric trains will be used, while the service volume is estimated at over 1 million train kilometers per year.

The long-term development plan for the railway network foresees the extension of the contract to other national lines. According to the documents, the Tirana–Hani i Hotit segment could be put into operation in 2030, with a travel time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the Durrës–Pogradec line is expected to open after 2035, with a travel time of about 3 hours and 15 minutes.

With the expansion of the network, the volume of operation is expected to increase significantly, reaching around 4 million train kilometers per year by 2036. The documents also foresee the increase in the fleet of electric trains to cope with the increase in service and the expansion of the railway network in the country.
