Albania among the most urbanized countries in the region/ Migration to cities

Urbanization has significantly transformed the way societies around the world live. In recent decades, economic development, industrialization, and the concentration of employment, education, and service opportunities in cities have driven the continued migration of people from rural areas to urban centers. As a result, places where the majority of people still live in the countryside have become increasingly rare.

According to an analysis by Visual Capitalist, based on World Bank data, only 60 countries in the world still have more than half of their population living in rural areas. The majority of these are in sub-Saharan Africa, with smaller numbers in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania and the Caribbean region.

For Albania, data shows that 34.62% of the population lives in rural areas, while the rest is concentrated in cities. This level ranks the country among the most urbanized in the region.

Compared to neighboring countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina has the highest percentage of rural population, at 49.2%, followed by Serbia with 42.6%. In North Macedonia, nearly 40% of the population lives in rural areas. Albania ranks second to last in this regional comparison, while Montenegro holds the last place, where only 31.16% of the population lives outside urban areas.

Globally, Africa dominates the ranking of countries with the most rural populations. Burundi, Malawi, Nigeria and South Sudan are among the countries where the majority of the population continues to live in villages.

According to Our World in Data, urbanization has been one of the most significant demographic changes of the past century. In 1960, about two-thirds of the world's population lived in rural areas. Today, that percentage has fallen to about 43%, and urban populations now make up the majority of the planet's inhabitants.

This transformation has been particularly rapid in East Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, where economic expansion and urban development have accelerated internal migration. Projections indicate that in the coming decades, global population growth will continue to be concentrated largely in urban areas, with cities continuing to attract the bulk of new residents.
