$70 Billion Immigration Package - US House of Representatives Passes Bill

A long political stalemate in the U.S. Congress over funding for immigration enforcement ended Tuesday. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a $70 billion bill to fund U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Border Patrol through the remainder of President Donald Trump's administration.

The 214-212 vote, which was more or less along party lines, sends the partisan legislation to the White House for Trump's signature. Representative Kevin Kiley, a former Republican who recently became an independent, joined Democrats in opposing the measure.

The Republican-led Senate passed the same bill late last week after a marathon voting session. Republicans used an expedited process known as reconciliation, which allowed them to bypass opposition from Senate Democrats.

Political disagreements between Republicans and Democrats over immigration reform led to a 76-day partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year. The shutdown ended in April after Trump signed a bipartisan bill that funds law enforcement agencies not involved in the president's immigration crackdown through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

Trump has repeatedly thwarted Republican efforts to pass legislation in the Senate with his support for $1 billion for security at his White House ballroom and a $1.8 billion "counter-weapon" fund that could compensate his political allies for accusations that the government has mistreated them.

Democrats opposed funding for immigration enforcement after the killing of two Americans by immigration agents in January.
