Anti-immigration protests, Belfast in flames - Cars and houses set on fire after a knife attack

Masked men torched houses and cars in Belfast in a wave of anti-immigrant violence on Tuesday evening. The incident followed a knife attack in which a Sudanese man was accused, Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill said.
Hundreds of protesters, many with their faces covered, attacked police and burned vehicles in a number of locations across Northern Ireland after a video of a stabbing attack, which left a man with serious neck and head wounds, went viral.
Masked youths gathered across Belfast early Tuesday evening, as police responded by deploying armored vehicles. Protesters set a number of vehicles on fire across the city, including a bus in east Belfast.
A number of houses were seen burning in the city on Tuesday evening. Video broadcast by the BBC showed police helping a family escape from a burning house.
"There can be no justification and no excuse for these attacks," O'Neill said in a statement. "Groups of masked men burning families from their homes is nothing short of despicable cowardice."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the first knife attack, which occurred in north Belfast late Monday night, as "disgusting."
The attack, which is not currently being treated as terrorism, comes at a time of high tensions in Britain following the killing of a student who was handcuffed by police while dying from stab wounds after his killer, a Sikh man, falsely claimed a racist attack.
It also comes after repeated protests over immigration, with populist parties saying Britain's asylum policy had allowed dangerous men into the country. Last year there were anti-immigrant riots in Northern Ireland amid anger over an alleged sexual assault.
Northern Ireland's main political party leaders jointly condemned the attack, calling it "horrific" and also called for calm.
