EU4FoodSafety project launched: 13.5 million euros to strengthen food safety in Albania

On World Food Safety Day, the EU4FoodSafety project was presented in Tirana, a new initiative that aims to improve food safety standards in Albania and further align the national system with European Union requirements.
The project is funded by the European Union with 12.5 million euros and is also supported by the German government with an additional fund of 1 million euros. Its implementation will be carried out in cooperation with the German organization GIZ and Albanian institutions operating in the field of food security.
During the event, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Andi Salla, described the initiative as an important step in strengthening the food control system and accelerating reforms related to European integration.
"Food safety is closely linked to the protection of citizens' health, consumer confidence and the development of the agri-food sector. Improving standards also directly affects the ability of Albanian producers to compete in European markets," the minister said.
Salla emphasized that Albanian institutions are continuing to work on modernizing control and inspection systems, increasing professional capacities, and harmonizing legislation with that of the European Union.
According to him, the project will help address existing challenges through concrete measures aimed at increasing the level of food safety throughout the production and trade chain.
The event was also attended by the European Union Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, who underlined the importance of creating a reliable system that guarantees safe products for consumers.
"Food safety is a basic right of every citizen. Our goal is to support Albania in establishing a modern control system, with laboratories, inspectors and veterinary services that operate according to European standards," Gonzato declared.
He added that through EU4FoodSafety, monitoring and control mechanisms will be strengthened in all links of the food chain, while simultaneously increasing the quality of Albanian products and opportunities for export to EU markets.
According to project representatives, investments in laboratories, technical expertise and professional training will contribute to building a more efficient system for preventing and managing food risks. The benefits are expected to be felt both by consumers, through greater guarantees of food safety, and by farmers and businesses, who will have the opportunity to increase their standards and competitiveness.
The EU4FoodSafety project is considered an important component of the European integration process, as it supports the implementation of reforms and standards required by the European Union in the field of food safety.
