"Albania leads the region in implementing reforms" - Koçiu: 212

Albania continues to lead the Western Balkan countries in implementing the reforms envisaged by the European Union's Reform and Growth Instrument.

At the second meeting of the Monitoring Committee of this instrument, representatives of the Albanian government and European institutions took stock of the progress achieved so far, assessing the results in five key areas and the funds released to support reforms and strategic investments in the country.

"33 reform steps have been completed and verified in five policy pillars: Private Sector Development, Human Capital, Digitalization, Clean Energy and Rule of Law. Over 212 million euros have been unblocked and are being used in direct budget support and co-financing of strategic investments. Albania leads the Western Balkans region in terms of the pace of reform implementation. This shows that we are on the right track towards Brussels" , said Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu.

The results so far show not only the fulfillment of the reform objectives, but also the strengthening of the institutional mechanisms that guarantee their implementation and monitoring. The Albanian authorities emphasized that any funding received is directly linked to concrete reforms verified by the European Commission.

“We had submitted our first full reporting package of 41 reform steps and were awaiting the assessment of the European Commission. The European Commission confirmed 21 of these 41 steps, placing Albania at the top of the Western Balkans in terms of reform implementation. Albania’s cumulative unblocked funding is now over 212.8 million euros, the highest in the Western Balkans region. However, these figures are not goals in themselves. They are evidence of something more significant, that our governance systems are functional, our coordination architecture is working”, stated Eridana Çano, National Coordinator of the RGF.

According to her, the current pace of reforms will keep the country among the best performers in the region, while further implementation of the reform agenda is expected to support the strategic objective of Albania's full integration into the European Union.
