Where do Albanians prefer to travel? For holidays within the country, abroad to meet relatives

Albanians make millions of trips each year, but the motives vary significantly depending on the destination. Within the country, vacations and leisure activities dominate, while trips outside Albania continue to be mainly related to visits to relatives and friends, reflecting the impact that emigration continues to have on population movements.
According to INSTAT data, during 2025, Albanian residents aged 15 and over made around 4.5 million trips for personal or business purposes, both domestically and internationally. Almost all trips were for personal reasons, which accounted for 97.6% of the total, while those for business only 2.4%.
Within Albania, trips for holidays and leisure accounted for 52.8% of the total, ranking ahead of visits to relatives and friends, which accounted for 42.3%. Abroad, the picture is the opposite: 52% of trips were made to visit relatives and friends, while 41.7% were for holidays.
Data shows that, although tourist travel has become an increasingly important part of Albanians' movements, family ties with emigration continue to be the main reason for traveling abroad.
In terms of destinations, Tirana was the most visited region within the country, attracting 13.7% of trips, followed by Vlora with 12.2%. Korça and Durrës followed, each with 7.3% of trips.
For trips outside Albania, Italy remains the most preferred destination with 11.3% of the total, while Greece ranks second with 10.4%. In third place is Germany with 4%, while a portion of trips were also directed to other countries, such as Turkey, Spain and Montenegro.
Albanians stayed an average of 5.3 nights for each trip they took during the year. The months of July and August recorded the highest number of nights spent, confirming that the summer season remains the main period for travel and vacations.
