Trump signs deal with Iran - Immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump signed a deal with Iran that requires Tehran to reduce its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and waive US-backed sanctions on the country, immediately allowing Iran to sell its oil freely.

The initial agreement to end the war takes effect immediately after the leaders of the two countries sign it. The agreement provides for a permanent end to attacks and begins a 60-day negotiation period to reach a final agreement on the future of Iran's nuclear program, although Trump left the door open to resuming attacks.

Trump signed a physical copy while dining with French President Emmanuel Macron at Versailles, the palace where many historic agreements have been signed over the centuries, ending wars or territorial disputes.

Much of the agreement would restore the pre-war status quo, including an end to hostilities, the resumption of talks between the US and Iran over Tehran's nuclear project, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the crucial passage for the world's oil and natural gas, the closure of which created a historic global energy crisis.

The deal opens the strait duty-free for two months, allowing a fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies to resume, but does not rule out future tariffs, according to drafts by both countries. In exchange, the US will move to waive, but not eliminate, some broad sanctions against Iran.

The agreement also confirms a commitment to Lebanon's territorial integrity in the face of Israel's occupation and continued aggression as they seek to target Hezbollah positions, despite a fragile ceasefire that continues.

This is one of the most delicate parts of the agreement, because Israel has maintained that it will continue to “defend itself” and occupy large areas of Lebanon. Iran has repeatedly demanded that Israel withdraw under the agreement, a condition that Tel Aviv has already rejected.

The US and Israel went to war on February 28, partly to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
