Record honey, but behind the figures lies a decline/ Production increases, hive

Honey production in Albania reached the highest level recorded in the last two decades. According to INSTAT data, sourced from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, a total of 6,299 tons of honey were produced in 2025, up from 5,940 tons in 2024.

In the space of a year, production increased by 359 tons, or about 6%. Compared to 2005, when production was 1,816 tons, the amount of honey produced in the country has increased by about 247%, becoming nearly 3.5 times higher.

Korça was the region with the largest production during 2025, with 1,006 tons of honey, or about 16% of the national total. In second place is Vlora with 855 tons, followed by Elbasan with 825 tons. These three regions alone provided more than 42% of the total production.

Korça also provided the largest increase in volume compared to the previous year, with 98 tons more. Gjirokastra recorded strong growth, where production expanded by about 27%, from 299 to 379 tons. Production also increased in Shkodër, Tirana, Lezhë, Dibër, Elbasan, Berat and Durrës.

On the other hand, a decline was recorded in Fier, where production decreased by about 5.4%, in Kukës by 2.6% and in Vlora by 0.5%.

Although overall production reached a record high, average yields continued to decline. In 2025, an average of 10.2 kilograms of honey per hive was produced, down from 10.3 kilograms the year before. This is the lowest level recorded in the data series that began in 2010.

Compared to 2019, when the yield was 14.2 kilograms per hive, productivity has decreased by about 28%. While compared to the maximum level of 18.3 kilograms recorded in 2015, the decrease amounts to more than 44%.

Elbasan had the highest yield in the country, with 17.1 kilograms per hive, followed by Korça with 11.9 kilograms and Shkodra with 10.5 kilograms. The lowest yield, of 8 kilograms per hive, was recorded in Gjirokastër, Kukës and Lezha.

The increase in overall production, accompanied by a decrease in average yield, suggests that the expansion has come mainly from an increase in the number of hives and not from an improvement in their productivity.
