How did the livestock structure change during 2025? The number of beehives increased by 9.8%, while the strongest decline was recorded in pigs
During 2025, the livestock sector in the country has seen some changes in structure and production levels compared to the previous year. According to data from INSTAT, some animal categories have registered growth, while others have declined.
The number of cattle in the country increased by 1.1% during 2025, going from 272 thousand heads to 275 thousand heads. The number of cows also increased by 0.8%, increasing from 224 thousand to 226 thousand. On the other hand, the number of woolly animals decreased by 0.9% compared to 2024. Sheep, as the most representative category within this structure, have marked a more pronounced decrease of 3.8%, decreasing from 968 thousand to 932 thousand heads.
The number of cattle has also decreased by 7.4%. Within this category, the number of goats has recorded the largest decrease by 7.9%, going from 501 thousand heads to 461 thousand heads.
The most significant decline in the livestock structure was recorded in pigs, where the number decreased by 28.2%, going from 104 thousand to 75 thousand. Also, within this category, the number of sows was reduced by 13.6%.
The number of poultry also recorded a slight decrease of 0.5%. However, within this category, the number of chickens recorded the largest decrease of 8.3%. Meanwhile, the number of equines decreased by 3.2%.
A positive trend has been observed in beekeeping, where the number of beehives has increased by 9.8%, going from 587 thousand hives in 2024 to 645 thousand hives in 2025.
According to geographical distribution, the regions with the highest number of cattle for 2025 are Fier with 13.9% and Korça with 12.6% of the total head.
The highest concentration of woolly mare is recorded in the Vlora region with 26.5% and in the Gjirokastra region with 17.3%. These same regions also have the highest concentration of sheep, with 24.0% and 16.4% of the total head, respectively.
The highest number of pigs was recorded in the Lezha district with 38.6% and in the Shkodra district with 32.7%.
Regarding livestock products, total milk production has marked a decrease of 0.1%, going from 876 thousand tons in 2024 to 868 thousand tons in 2025. Cow's milk continues to be the main source of production, accounting for 85.7% of the total, followed by sheep's milk with 7.1% and goat's milk with 7.2%.
Meanwhile, meat production in live weight has increased by 2.5%, going from 130 thousand tons to 133 thousand tons.
Egg production also declined during 2025. From 888 million eggs produced in 2024, production dropped to 837 million eggs, marking a decrease of -5.8%.
In contrast, honey production has followed a positive trend, increasing by 6%, from 5,940 tons to 6,299 tons during 2025.
